At Yogadoll we admire the awesome Leisl Klaebe so interviewed her to hear all about her journey and where she is today.
How long have you been in the fitness industry?
I have been working in the health and fitness industry since 2002, as an instructor, personal trainer, fitness manager and group exercise manager.
What did you do before?
Prior to this, I was working in television as a presenter and producer, winning a Logie Award in 1991 and then moving on to establish my own film company in Sydney. I kept this going until 2002 when I made a major sea change from the film industry into the fitness industry and have never looked back!
What got you hooked on fitness?
I was taking my children to Kindergym while I was living in London and my husband was editing a Gillian Armstrong film, and I thought, I could to do this. It would be making a bigger and more purposeful impact on people’s lives rather than making films. When we returned home to Australia I got my Certificate III in Fitness and then started teaching children’s fitness programs.
Favourite class, to teach?
Overall, ever – Bodystep, it was my first love and still my fave. Currently Pilates Reformer.
What’s your current role?
Group Exercise Manager at Virgin Active Norwest but I will be the Group Exercise Manager for the Sydney CBD from November this year, managing our new nine studio Margaret Street club and also both our Collection Clubs (our current one at Barangaroo and a new one in Bligh Street).
How long have you been with the virgin group?
I started with Virgin in January 2016 as the Group Exercise Coordinator, by 2017 I was the Group Exercise Manager and won the coveted Star Award which sent me to London to attend the awards ceremony and meet Richard Branson. Just recently I have been appointed in my new role as Group Exercise Manager Sydney CBD, managing three clubs.
What’s a day like in Liesl's world?
A standard day in my life involves getting up around 6am, getting my son off to school and walking my dog. I generally have about 5 hours work to do in the office, and I teach classes (Barre Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates) and deliver Reformer Pilates Personal training sessions to clients every day. Some days I may have five clients and four classes and other days only a couple of classes and clients. I aim to train myself at least three times a week – usually free weights and Sprint classes for a good fat burning cardio blast.
What’s your favourite part of your role?
Leading my team, helping people get tribal and connected, and working together towards a common goal. To be honest whatever class I am teaching that day is always a highlight for me – I still love it – even after 16 years.
What’s different about working for an organisation like Virgin Active?
Virgin is a great brand with very open philosophies and clear vision about what we are doing and why.
It is super comfortable ‘fit’ for me, and honestly, it just feels like home.
Why is great, well fitting, comfy activewear so important?
When you teach four classes a day active wear that can move from one class style to another, breaths, wears well, is comfy and that you feel good in, is a strong motivator to exercise more and move your body more.
What do you look for in an activewear brand?
Colour – something a bit different to what everyone else is wearing, something I can mix and match and all of the things on the above list.
Your future career goals?
I am right where I want to be, doing what I what I love and what I find rewarding.
